The suspects climbed the scaffolding and banged on a student’s window

Two people were arrested at the end of April (29/4) after climbing the scaffolding and banging on student windows at St Catharine’s College.

Head Porter Dave Dove told students: “Thanks to a member of the public and our students who immediately reported concerns […] the Duty Porter was able to confront these individuals and phone the police.

“By 1.15 am on Saturday 30th April, police officers had visited the College, taken statements from a student and the Duty Porter, and arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.”

In an email sent to students, the College said: “The safety of everyone at St Catharine’s is of the utmost importance”.

The College has since added more security including “wrapped” scaffold towers, to make the bars less accessible and less visible. Signage about alarms/security systems are to be added shortly. Additionally, the College has brought forward plans to install window restrictors in every bedroom.

Students involved who wanted to talk through their experiences were provided with welfare support. The Senior Tutor was in touch with affected students to offer meetings and identify what further support was needed.

The College is now waiting for the assigned Police Liaison Officer to return from annual leave for a full update on the investigation.

Varsity is the independent newspaper for the University of Cambridge, established in its current form in 1947. In order to maintain our editorial independence, our print newspaper and news website receives no funding from the University of Cambridge or its constituent Colleges.

We are therefore almost entirely reliant on advertising for funding and we expect to have a tough few months and years ahead.

In spite of this situation, we are going to look at inventive ways to look at serving our readership with digital content and of course in print too!

Therefore we are asking our readers, if they wish, to make a donation from as little as £1, to help with our running costs. Many thanks, we hope you can help!
